Burma, now called Myanmar, is regarded as one of the poorest countries in the world with an average annual per capita income of just under $200. 90% of the population live at or below the poverty line, more than 30% of the children under the age of 5 suffer chronic malnutrition and nearly half of all children never attend school. According to UNICEF, Burma has the 2nd worst mortality rate in children in Asia with as many as 400 deaths per day for children under the age of 5.
